Hip Hopopotamus

Thug Life by nature.

I love Hip-hop, listening to it has been a developing hobby of mine for about 4 years now. At some point I started really appreciate it to the fullest once i started learning about the culture behind it; for instance it was developed as a form of protest music for Black Americans to completely differentiate themselves from all the music they previously help create but was stolen from them. Hip-hop was always intended to be something that the white man wouldn’t touch and on the surface wouldn’t understand. Though there are some white people like Eminem, who have touched it, Hip-hop at the heart of it was created to represent struggle, to give a voice to people who suffer from racism & poverty; The ones who get it get it and can do it right — not Vanilla Ice. I could probably sit and give you a full analytical post about the whole belief that Hip-hop died years ago, and if didn’t actually die it’s been completely malnourished and dumbed down and that it needs to be reborn with it’s original intent. Hip-hop isn’t that dumb shit you hear about “Money, Hoes, and Drugs” (though even some of that has appeal to an extent if you understand it) trust me, if you really look into it it’s very intelligent thought provoking music. If you ever want to hear some really poetic, thought provoking and intellectual hip hop try out these artists: Lupe Fiasco, CunninLynguists, Tupac, Blue Scholars, Common Market… and trust me when i say this, there are tons more that deserve mention; these are just some of my personal favorites.

Oh, and if you are wondering on the case of who i believe was better Tupac or Biggie, Tupac HANDS DOWN.

Can’t forget to mention some of the newer cats out there like Little Brother, Kanye West or even Drake (gotta hear his last mixtapes before he signed with Lil Wayne).

Got any links to the Drake stuff so I can check it out?

That’s funny that you just mentioned that.. because someone thought they’ve heard the name “Hip Hippopotamus” before and and i told her it’s probably because of Flight of the Concords and I sent her this version of that song: Live Version which is funny too! :D I love when he says “free stylin’ makes self conscious” or something like that.

I understood hip hop when i first heard it back in the dark ages. I get the concept and all but i just don’t much care for the music itself. Which is rare because the only other genre of music i don’t listen to is country. Everything else i will and do listen to and i mean everything. My cd collection is very odd to most people since it has so much variety. My computer has more space taken up for music than anything else.

I think in general most people are like that. Country and Rap are the two things genres that you almost need to be in the demographic intended to ever even understand the appeal. I will admit country is REALLY hard for me to get into, but i can handle hip-hop very well! :D

I’m glad to hear that your CD collections is similar to mine then. My CD Collection is really intensely different. Considering my favorite genres are: Hip-hop, Folk (indie to blue grass), Electronica and Metal. Typically i go through phases, and they last about a quarter of the year.. so they are kind of like the 4 seasons to me! The phase usually tones my mood as well.. so i wonder if it does have to do with the seasons? lol

It does for me. In the spring and summer i listen to my hard stuff for the energy and then in winter i listen to more easy stuff. Loreena McKennitt is my favorite in winter. Or anything sung by Alison Krauss. I tend to listen to a ton of Japanese composers as well. In summer its more NIN, Tool, or any punk. Now i’m talking real punk not that bubblegum crap kids these days call punk.
