The holiday season just started up and that means holiday web comics everwhere! This is one of the few I’ve ever done. I’m rarely thinking about holiday jokes when the time comes up.. probably cos its a busy time of the year.

With 2009 on its way and the hopes that i can get Anhedonia Blue ready by the end of it, i thought I’d really embellish on the fact that this girl i drew in this original 2007 release, was actually a precursor to the main character in Anhedonia, Eydis. It wasn’t until the other day that i really noticed that she looked almost exactly like her! So i took a bit of artistic liberty with the old dead girl and made her resemble a bit more of the way I’m hoping Eydis will look in the final product.

Anyway, Happy Holiday ya’ll and I’ll see you next week.

I’m the type of guy that sees food and before i really think about it, I’m probably already eating it…well.. unless it has something like mayo on it and i can tell… but that’s a whole other story. Have you ever experienced a food that was so good you could explode? Or taken a drug that makes you explode?! It’s so good, it sucks.

This is my PSA on drugs: DON’T EAT EM OR YOU WILL EXPLODE!

Anyway, this comic was completely redrawn from scratch. The one redeeming factor about the original, in my opinion, was that tge creature that Coney sees when he looks at Reeder was so crazy looking. When i drew this back when, it was the first time i explored drawing odd things that don’t make much sense. Now that I’ve spent the last year i or so drawing Unconscious Ink’s i think that now i was able to give the Creature Reeder more character; hence why i redid this one at this point of time. Once i sketched out the new creature i felt like i wanted to have a little bit more fun with Coney’s face, which in turn made me realize that this comic wasn’t funny in the first place. So that is why this comic’s new twist is as extreme as i took it. I felt it should be different enough then the original yet continue the recurring theme in Reeder; death.

To further this rant, fuckers made of glass… there is realistically no way a glass object could plow through a wall of brick, wood, and dry wall. i mean COME ON KIDS! REALLY!?!
This version of this issue of Reeder doesn’t have any “improvements,” other than the fact that i dropped the stupid joke and i made the bloody section a bit more gruesome. Since a very common theme in Reeder Rabbit is death, i felt that i should go back and actually make the death more the center of attention. Why may you ask, am i so obsessed with death?!? It’s because i find the only way to not get depressed about the inevitable is to just laugh it off; the simple fact is we are all gonna die, even stupid cute animals.

First off, i want to say that the concept behind this comic came from a friend of mine, Austin Reeder, who helped me start the Reeder Rabbit comic in the first place. If it wasn’t for him, my renewed interest in art and new found love for web based and regular comic books may have never been born. So Austin, i take this opportunity to thank you… but this is the last time i will be doing that. Ever!!!!

Anyway, when Austin and I were throwing this concept back and fourth back then i love the idea and tried to draw it as best as i could. When i say best as i could, i lie, i spent 20 mins max on a really crappy tablet pc that lagged so bad that i could barely draw it. At that time i didn’t really take this comic all that serious though, so i didn’t really care much. Though the artist part of me never felt like i succeeded in drawing a decent piece; honestly i failed at it when i look at the orignal. The last cell where Coney is dead wasn’t nearly as dramatic as i envisioned it and it didn’t really show what i wanted it to show about the way i see war.

I wanted to make two points with this. One, when you see recuiters at school, the incentives of which they pose to you are often aren’t worth the risk. For instance, in my opinion, when they offer to pay for you school, it my mind the only thing i can think is “yeah, if i make it back alive.” The positions and other things they promise you (as i hear from people who’ve enlisted) you never get. And two, In a time where we’ve been in a stupid war in the Middle East, where we’ve as a society been wasting our time, money, resources and the lives of the people involved i think this war (or most wars for that matter) is pointless. It just proves to me the power of the media and patriotic manipulation. I hate the media’s negative usage to twisted the whole thing to seem like a good idea. War is never a good option, but the media seemed to have a way of making everything seem like we should do it.

I DIDN’T like Bush.

Anyway, I’m sure a lot of us know what its like to go through the process of trying to choose the right college. Finding the degree that fits your needs and interests can be a pain in the ass, and even when you find one close to what you want in the end it may or may not be what you end up wanting to do in the end. For instance, my psych degree, though it was useful to some extent, finding a job in psychology that i like is rare and in any case what I’ve wanted to be my whole life is an artist. So here i am trying to this after college and writing comic about college.

The timing for this comic couldn’t be any more appropriate. Now that I’ve moved to Seattle I’m struggling to find some sort of balance between getting a job that i don’t want and finding a school that i can afford while working at that job.

Original. Man the original of this really didn’t do the bloody potato justice.

You may be wondering why this is called “The Best of… Reeder Rabbit Remastered,” and why this first comic is one you’ve already seen before. The answer is simple. The people who have followed Reeder Rabbit since 2006, when it first started, probably know that I’ve never been content with the style of the comic; the art was always lacking in my opinion. In the past two years, especially the last 5months, my artistic style and understanding of the digital medium have evolved. Now that i feel comfortable with Adobe Photoshop, my tablet and coloring, i feel that i can finally do this comic the justice it deserved from the beginning.

So what does this mean? I haven’t fully decided the extent of this new project; how long it will run and how many of the original 69 comic’s i will redo is up in the air, but i think about 30 of them are defiantly in. I will more then likely be posting on Tuesdays! If you have any recommendations please feel free to comment here and tell me which you’d like to see! This is as much for you guys as it is for me. Oh, and don’t worry, i will still be posting inklings every Thursday.

To view what i call the “classic” versions click the classic button up top; feel free to laugh at how bad they are.

Spirit Animal:

Spirit Animal has always been one of my favorite comics I’ve drawn. The primary reason being, it was the first time i ever attempted doing a cartoony facial expression; which you can see on Coney’s face in the second cell. I never felt that this comic was as funny as it was in my mind because the original drawing was really sloppy. I think now that it’s in color you can now see that the butterfly is “pretty” which is something that makes this funny to me, its cute things are usually the last thing you’d ever expect to eat your face. original
